Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology: May 2022

Summer has arrived! May 5th takes us into the month of the Wood Snake, the start of summer in the Chinese solar calendar. In the Flying Star Feng Shui chart for May 2022, star 8 of prosperity, flies to the center. Star 8 is an auspicious star but its presence this month also strengthens the annual star 5 of misfortune in the center, reinforcing the month’s theme of change.

May by nature is a fast-moving month. As one of the four travel stars in Chinese Astrology, the Snake triggers movement and change, especially if you were born in year or day of the Pig, Rabbit, and Sheep. With the Snake clashing with the Tiger year, both travel stars, we can expect a highly dynamic month. Lots of us will be traveling or going somewhere. Stay mindful and work in the spirit of collaboration. Yin Wood in the heavenly stem of the month serves as a reminder to listen and be open to other viewpoints.
Jupiter in Aries from May 10 through October 27 signals a big shift in our interests, as we dedicate our time and energy on personal growth, self-development (including self-branding and self-promotion), and a whirlwind of adventures after a few months of swimming in a sea of collective consciousness when Jupiter was speeding through Pisces. With Mercury in retrograde for most of the month, it’s best that we pay attention to details before we commit to any project, and make space for delays. It may be hard to slow down with the Snake square the Tiger, but do remember to take a pause and return to your center when everything seems to be coming at once. Stop and look around before you cross the street.
The Snake is a Yin Fire element, associated with joy and the heart. Make this month a time to engage in activities and hobbies that make your heart sing to incorporate Fire element into your daily life. Stay connected in the heart with your loved ones. Eat foods that are in season such as tomatoes, berries, cherries, and figs, as well as bitter greens such as arugula, kale, and dandelion greens.
The animal signs that have affinities with the Snake are secret friend the Monkey and allies the Rooster and the Ox. Those with these signs in their chart can expect a more supportive and social month ahead, with support from friends and family (though keep in mind that other signs in the natal chart may contribute to a more challenging month.)
If you were born in a Yin Water or Yang Water year or day, the period between May 5th to June 5th is a good time to schedule personal, medical, or professional consultations as the Snake brings support from people in a position to help and heavenly guidance. *Water years are years that end with 2 or 3, including 1972, 1973, 1982, 1983, and so on.
Take caution this month if you have a Pig, the sign opposite the Snake, or the Monkey, the sign opposite the Tiger, in your chart. It’s a busy month ahead and as travel stars clashing with each other, those with a Pig, Snake, Monkey, or Tiger in their chart should be especially mindful when driving or traveling.
MAY 2022 FENG SHUI
In the Flying Star Feng Shui chart for May 2022 above, the numbers in green are the annual stars for the current year (good until February 3, 2023), while the numbers in blue refer to May 2022’s monthly stars (good from May 5th to June 5th).
The number in the center and its corresponding trigram can give us further insights into the general moods and themes of that period, whether it’s an annual number or a monthly number. Flying star 8 in the center corresponds to Gen, the Mountain trigram. Associated with Yang Earth element, the Mountain trigram is a symbol of stability and stillness. With two broken Yin lines at the bottom representing Earth and one solid Yang line at the top representing Heaven, the trigram illustrates the importance of being firmly grounded in earthly matters. When we’re rooted and in our center, we can steadily climb higher and observe truths from a bird’s eye view without judgment. We’re also more likely to remain calm even in the most stressful situations. The trigram also reminds us that there is a time for action, and a time for rest. Only in stillness can we gather and cultivate energy.
This month’s most productive sectors are the Northwest, West, North, and East, with monthly star 9 of joy and future prosperity in the Northwest, star 1 of wisdom and distant prosperity in the West, star 4 of romance and creativity in the North, and star 6 of power in the East. Activate the positive energies by spending your time and doing your daily activities in these sectors of your residence or office. *Keep in mind that the effects of the visiting stars are also influenced by their interactions with the natal stars.
The sectors afflicted by the annual or monthly star 5 of misfortune and star 2 of illness should ideally be kept quiet, but if you can’t avoid them, use them mindfully – no loud noises or banging the doors. In May, these sectors are the center, Southwest, and Northeast.
Reinforce any doors or windows located in the West and Southeast sectors, afflicted by the annual and monthly stars 7 of robbery and fire dangers.
*Although there may be remedies to lessen a sector’s negative energy, the best solution is to simply avoid using the sector, or keep the area as quiet as possible and respect whatever energy is visiting there, especially if you’re not familiar with your home’s natal energies as you may accidentally activate a negative natal star. If you do have to spend time in the area, keep your activities there minimal. Common sense also applies: for example, it’s a good idea to have doors and windows reinforced if they’re located in a sector affected by star 7 of robbery.

**If you have had a Feng Shui assessment done, consider getting an annual update as annual stars are strong in influence and can highly affect the well-being of the home’s occupants. A proper Feng Shui analysis always takes into account the floor plan of a home, its location, direction, external and internal environment, and the year the home was built, as well as its affinity with the residents’ natal charts.
Just like we spend time on self-care as part of our life’s self-work, there is major “home” work involved once you’ve had your home professionally Feng Shui’d. Knowing your home’s natal energies brings full awareness of how your immediate environment can positively influence your life.
