Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology Update: June 2020

June 5th brings us into the month of the Water Horse. We’re now in the height of summer in the Chinese solar calendar, with Fire element at its strongest. In two weeks Yang will take over Yin at solstice.

The first half of the fifth month belongs to the “Grain Ripens” seasonal marker – a time of expansion in nature. Fruits and vegetables are quickly ripening. June is usually a season of joy, associated with the season’s Fire element, and the best time of the year to be most physically active under the sun. The month’s heavenly element, however, which is powerful ocean water, tells us to trust our instinct and err on the side of caution. We’re still in a pandemic – get your dose of sunshine, but retreat and shelter when you anticipate big waves approaching.
The Horse is a Yang Fire sign, associated with the Sun. As one of the four cardinal signs, which are stars of romance (“Peach Blossoms”) in Chinese Astrology, the free-spirited Horse awakens our longings for love, adventures, and play. The Horse is also the sign opposite the Rat, which makes June the year of the Rat’s most sensitive month. Whenever the year’s sign meets its opposition is a time of confrontations and resistance, as well as restlessness and relationship issues as the Rat is also a cardinal sign.
June is poised to be one of 2020’s most challenging months for everyone, but especially so if you were born in year or day of the Rat or the Horse. With two opposing forces at play this month – Yang Water and Yang Fire, the two most powerful of the Chinese Five Elements, moderation is key.
Balance the month’s clashing elements with Earth to center the self and calm the nerves. Earth is the element that puts out Fire and contains Water. Cultivate Earth element qualities, which are kindness and gratitude. Engage in mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, and Qigong to ground and center the self. For some useful tips on how to bring in Earth element, review the April update.
When we’re centered, we’re more able to listen to our instinct and make a sound decision based on truth rather than fear.
June 2020 Feng Shui
In the Flying Star Feng Shui chart for June 2020 above, the numbers in green are the annual stars for the current year (good until February 3, 2021), while the numbers in blue refer to June’s monthly stars.
The number in the center is an indicator of the general moods and themes of that period, whether it’s an annual number or a monthly number. In June, monthly star 4 of academic excellence and romance “flies” to the center, which together with the Horse emphasize a socially-oriented month. We may be in the mood to spend more time with loved ones, but with the annual star 7 (which is Metal) clashing with the monthly 4 (which is Wood) in the center and the Horse clashing with the Rat year, keep reminding yourself to consider yours and your loved ones’ health and safety first.
The trigram associated with the monthly star 4 is Xun, the Wind trigram, which is of Yin Wood element. The broken Yin lines at the bottom of the trigram below two solid Yang lines suggest that whatever changes or chaos occurring in the environment are brought by people’s actions, as Earth and Heaven are still. We need to stay flexible in our attitude and behaviors to best adapt to the winds of change.
This month, the most productive sectors are the South, Southwest, and West sectors. Monthly star 8 of prosperity visits the South and forms an auspicious sum of 10 combination with the annual star 2. Do your work or daily activities in the South sector to activate the monthly 8, but limit your time there to a couple of hours at a time, especially if you start having digestive issues as the annual 2 is a star of illness. Monthly star 1 of wisdom visits the Southwest sector where the annual star 4 of academic excellence and romance is, which is ideal for office work, creative projects, and studies. Another great location for an office is the West sector, visited by the monthly star 6 of power and the annual star 9 of future prosperity.
Keep the East, Northeast, North, and Northwest sectors quiet in June. These are the sectors visited by the annual or monthly stars 5 of misfortune and stars 2 of illness. Take extra precautions when it comes to your health if your bedroom is located in any of these sectors. Avoid the East sector as much as possible as it’s especially afflicted with monthly star 2 and annual star 5. Reinforce all doors and windows located in the Northeast, visited by monthly 7.
*Although there may be remedies to lessen a sector’s negative energy, the best solution is to simply avoid using the sector, or keep the area as quiet as possible and respect whatever energy is visiting there, especially if you’re not familiar with your home’s natal energies as you may accidentally activate a negative natal star. If you do have to spend time in the area, keep your activities there minimal. Common sense also applies: for example, it’s a good idea to have doors and windows reinforced if they’re located in a sector affected by star 7 of robbery.

I also recommend getting a strategic life reading, which provides you with a blueprint for manifesting your highest potentials.
**If you have had a Feng Shui assessment done, consider getting an annual update as annual stars are strong in influence and can highly affect the well-being of the home’s occupants. A proper Feng Shui analysis always takes into account the floor plan of a home, its location, direction, external and internal environment, and the year the home was built, as well as its affinity with the residents’ natal charts.
Just like we spend time on self-care as part of our life’s self-work, there is major “home” work involved once you’ve had your home professionally Feng Shui’d. Knowing your home’s natal energies brings full awareness of how your immediate environment can positively influence your life.
